8 health essentials for your backpacking holiday

November 10, 2015 By itravelnet.com

Heading off on a backpacking holiday? Then there’s a high chance you’ll be going on all kinds of adventures and staying in a wide range of accommodation – some being a little more basic than you’re used to. You’ll eat a strange variety of foods, experience a host of different sanitary conditions and probably pass through an array of climates, so it’s important to keep yourself in tip-top shape. Accidents, injuries and sickness bugs are sometimes unavoidable, but here are eight health essentials that’ll ensure you stay fit and well for as long as possible.

1. First aid kit
You might not have much room in that backpack of yours but it is well worth squeezing in a first aid kit from this medical supplies website – after all, you never know when you might need antiseptic wipes, a sling or plasters. It’s better to be safe than sorry and with compact kits available, you don’t need to opt for anything too bulky.

2. Insect repellent
While a first aid kit should contain all the basic healthcare supplies, don’t forget to throw in extras such as insect repellent if it’s not included. There are a lot of mosquitos and other nasties across the globe, so it’s important to protect yourself – particularly if you’re travelling to areas where Malaria is a common problem.

3. Mosquito nets
Similarly, you can protect yourself from malaria by getting tablets from your nearest travel clinic and sleeping underneath a mosquito net. These can be packed neatly into small bags and won’t take up much room, so don’t take any unnecessary risks.

4. Rehydration salts
Planning on doing a lot of climbing or walking? Then you might need rehydration salts, particularly if you are exercising in a hot or humid climate. These can also give your body the essential nutrients it needs if you get a bout of diarrhoea and are a travel essential.

5. Headache pills
Whether you’re hungover or have heat exhaustion, headache tablets could come in useful, but it’s a good idea to buy regulated medicines before you leave the country so you know they’ve been scrutinised and tested properly.

6. Prescription medicines
Whether you’re jetting off for two weeks or two months, remember to take any prescribed meds with you. It might be difficult to source medication or see a doctor in your destination of choice, so be prepared before you go.

7. Hand sanitiser
You never know what you’re going to touch along the way, so having a bottle of hand sanitiser nearby will help to kill all those nasties lurking on your hands.

8. Face wipes
Face wipes are a great way to clean your hands and face as much as possible before eating if you’re nowhere near toilet facilities. They’re multi-purpose and are sure to prove useful in many different scenarios.

Backpacking is a great way to explore the world, but be sure to stay as safe and healthy as possible.
