Barcelona is one of the most popular cities in the world; the striking architecture, great shopping, beautiful people and outgoing culture, makes this capital a truly special place. Even though the city is packed with tourists thorough the whole year as a result of the beautiful weather, it is always good to check what special events are happening there while you plan your trip.
The coming month a huge event is about to take place – the legendary La Merce Festival which occurs from the 23-26 September. This amazing festival offers a combination of good music, traditional activates from all over Catalonia, massive fireworks show, parades and much more surprises!
Barcelona La Merce Festival started already in 1902 and its main aim was to honor the Patron Saint of Barcelona- Mare de Deu de la Merce. Another key reason for this big celebration is to wish official goodbye to the warm summer and welcome the chill autumn with open arms.
During the festival you will be able to enjoy lots of unique and fun things: extraordinary human towers competition where you will witness an outstanding display of teamwork and courage, a huge dragon walking around and shoots fireworks from his mouth (try to wear protective clothing), the famous Giants Parade with figures of kings, queens and nobles and the main music event – the well known BAM festival. The BAM festival is one of the biggest parties of the year! It takes place every evening during the festival and you can be sure to find there all the locals and famous Spanish celebrities.
The lineup this year is going to be pumping- over 50 international and local’s alternative bands are going to perform. Some of the big names include: The Hives, The Duke& The King, The Felice Brothers and many more. Every performance’s night finish with a big, happy party.
If you are lucky enough to have the option to travel to Barcelona during the days of the festival, keep in mind a few things:
1. Pay attention to pickpockets- no need to get too paranoid and look around for them constantly, but just be aware of your personal stuff – especially after you had a couple of drinks.
2. Try to wear protective clothing- numerous fireworks acts are planned all over town. Make sure you picked your outfit wisely-don’t wear wool, put on a hat and if it is not too hot have some gloves as well.
3. Leave your car outside the city- as you can imagine, the city will be packed with people. Not only you will have an extremely terrible time with finding parking, there is a chance your car will get damaged from all fireworks and drunk people.
