The digital nomad lifestyle is one that makes a lot of sense to a lot of people. Not wanting to be tied to any specific place in the world, you can do a job through the portal of the internet while picking and choosing where you travel. As long as you’re close to a laptop and have an internet connection, you can do your work in the time allotted for it, and spend the rest of your time immersing yourself in new places, with a different view out of your window every few weeks, or even days if you’re ambitious.
The idea of there being a best place to be a digital nomad may seem like a strange one to even raise. After all, isn’t the point of this lifestyle that the best place is wherever you want to go next? Well, yes and no. As you’ll see from a little bit of browsing at digitalnomads.world, the lifestyle is what you make it, that is true. But for some people living this life, there are certain places that have a few more advantages – and if you’re thinking about becoming a digital nomad, they’re certainly good ideas to keep in mind as a starter.
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Thailand is a haven for backpackers, and that has made it an ideal spot for digital nomads too thanks to its tourist-friendly resorts combined with a focus on modern convenience. Chiang Mai in particular has everything a 2020s nomad could want. There’s no shortage of excellent co-working spaces where you can get down to business and put the hours in at your job. Then you can step outside, stow your laptop at “home” and enjoy the beautiful temples and superb nightlife. The cost of living is low, too, so you’ll be able to make your salary go further – including saving a decent chunk to fund further travel.
Medellin, Colombia
Those of us who have a few decades in the bank may wrinkle our noses when we hear the name Medellin. At the end of the 20th century, it was famously a city with crime problems, but it’s put those days firmly in the past. Today it is one of South America’s most modern and investable cities, and it is set among beautiful rolling hills. Office space has been springing up constantly in the last few years, so you’ll always be able to find somewhere to work – and a vacation rental won’t set you back too much either. For a longer or shorter stay, and with access to a continent of infinite variety, Medellin is a hugely popular city for digital nomads.
Lisbon, Portugal
Although Europe, in general, tends to have a higher cost of living than most digital nomad havens, Lisbon is very competitively priced for anyone whose job is in an Anglophone country. If you’re reading this, that’s probably you. The capital of Portugal is a very decent starter city for the lifestyle: it’s clean, highly walkable and very modern with a large existing community of digital nomads. It’s also an exceptional base from which to travel further out; being in the EU, Portugal is covered by the Schengen common travel area, so you can move between countries without concern.
