Most people have plans for Christmas already. After all, it’s the time of year that most people spend with family and friends, getting the most out of the food, drink, presents and games associated with the festive period. Still, there are a few people who simply want to escape; after all, there are a few drawbacks to Christmas time. Whether it’s the cold and wet weather, the boredom of another simple week off or if other plans have been cancelled, it may just be the best time to have a look at offers online – you may actually find that it’s cheaper in the long run!
The UK has long been the world number six tourist destination among international travellers, consistently being named in that position in the United Nations World Tourism Organisation tables between 2002 and 2010. You don’t have to look far to see where people’s allegiances lie for escapes elsewhere – luckily for holidaymakers, a lot of them are nearby (and cheap!).
France has been number one over the last nine years, consistently beating out the US and China to the top spot. While it’s dropped in popularity in the last couple of years – perhaps not with Brits, of course – Spain is now the number four destination for holidaymakers, while Italy comes in at number five. Turkey and Germany – seventh and eighth respectively – completed the top ten in the way of European destinations.
With this in mind, and going on Teletext Holidays recommendations, you may want to escape to Paris in December or January. With the Louvre, the Musee d’Orsay, Montmartre, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower to fill your Christmas with high class and romantic notions, it would be silly to overlook the city as a holiday destination.
Then again, it is Christmas; why not do the holiday justice with a trip to the many markets of Germany? While the likes of Berlin undoubtedly do the job well when it comes to gluhwein, bratwurst and steins of wheat beer, you may find it much more fun to visit Munich. As far as the traditional Christmas feel goes, not many places do it better than this south German town.
Finally, it may be worth considering more far-flung destinations in Europe. Prague, in the Czech Republic, is the city of a hundred spires and is filled with a large number of beautiful buildings such as churches, palaces and even a castle. The Old Town will give you the perfect escape this Christmas, and for pretty darn cheap!
Whatever you choose, just ensure you get the best deal by looking online. You could save yourself a fortune!
