How To Get Your Pet Ready For Airplane Travel

June 30, 2017 By itravelnet.com

How To Get Your Pet Ready For Airplane Travel

Taking your pet with you when travelling on a plane was not a possibility some time ago. Nowadays, when it is accepted, the pet needs to be tranquilized and placed in the cargo area in a kennel. Although there are some airlines that allow even larger breeds to travel with you on a plane, in most cases you will only be allowed if you have a smaller dog. If this is the case, here are some things you should know about getting the bet ready for airplane travel.

Before Flying

It is really important to get the pet used to the carrier before you fly. Carriers should be seen as furniture in the home so that the dog or cat can be fully comfortable with it. Just put it close to the bed so that it can be explored at will.

The next step is to take the pet with you on car rides while in a carrier. A great trick is to have the trip end somewhere that the pet loves, like a park. As the pet becomes comfortable with the carrier it will be so much easier to fly with the loved one.

When You Get To The Airport

A large part of the preparation is about the trip to the airport. You need to learn about airport parking and you should get as close as possible to the terminal. The idea is to make the trip through the airport as fast as possible so that the pet does not get anxious.

It is a really good idea to learn as much as possible about airline regulations about pet travel. This will help you to prepare properly and you can speed up the process by having everything that you need on hand.

If necessary, you can use a mild tranquilizer for the pet. However, for this you need to talk to the veterinarian to be sure that everything is safe.

As You Are Flying

As you are boarded with the carried under the seat right in front of you (this is how you usually travel with small pets) it is time to enjoy the flight and make it pleasant, safe for the pet and you. Make sure that water or food is not left inside the pet carrier. If this happens the pet will spend most of the flight inside a puddle of water. You do not want this to happen. The trick is to pack food and some water with you in the carry-on that you are allowed to take with you.

Remember that pets will travel better when they have an empty stomach. This avoids vomiting and other accidents. When the pet is prone to being affected by motion sickness you can get some medication to deal with that from the vet.

Last but not least, be sure you are calm and that you make it as comfortable as possible for the pets. Having things that the pet knows inside the carrier helps much more than what you would imagine at first glance.
