Golf tourism is one of the main reasons to visit this superb slice of coastal Portugal. A beautiful coastal area of yellow sanded beaches, arched cliffs and unexplored wilderness, the Algarve in Portugal makes for the perfect place to unwind on holiday.
Get in: Faro airport
Aside from being extremely attractive, the Algarve region of Portugal is famed for its friendly people and fantastic food. In short it has all the ingredients for a relaxing vacation and is even easy to get to with a number of low cost flights arriving at the centrally-located Faro airport.
Easyjet is one of the carriers to offer no frills flights from international and regional airports across the United Kingdom and the flying time can be anywhere between 2 and a half to 3 hours.
Why visit
The Algarve can satisfy all needs in terms of accommodation. Like many people who have had to cut back their holiday budgets due to the recession, we decided to go for a self-catering apartment. But the Algarve has a wide range of hotels ranging from two to five stars.
Wherever you stay lovely weather is a given. You may have to contend with some short showers over the spring but that is a small price to pay for enjoying the less crowded time of year. Throughout the summer the Algarve is far enough south that you are almost guaranteed a hot and sunny climate.
What to do
Golfing fanatics will be pleased to know that they can usually book to stay somewhere that has easy access to an excellent course. These courses can all cater to different abilities and provide tuition and equipment to those who need it. In fact golf tourism has been one of the main driving points behind the success of tourism in the Algarve over the last decade. But this is not the not the only way to keep yourself occupied.
For those who want to explore the Algarve by bike they can take the Ecovia do Litoral route across the Algarve. This ride is only moderately challenging for experienced riders and there is plenty of comfort to be had along the way with excellent hotels to stay in and fine wines to be drunk along the way.
Going out and eating out
Having worked up an appetite you will find a wonderful range of restaurants in Quinto do Lago. Peri Peri chicken is one specialty not to be missed here, and the local cooking even makes the delicious food served at Portuguese chicken chain Nandos seem bland. Afterwards there is a great array of nightlife in the resorts such as Villamoura and Albufeira so you can experience the balmy night air of the Algarve.
