Things to do and see in Norway

Norway is a place that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. It has a remarkable appeal being one of the most beautiful countries. Sure, every country says they are the most beautiful, but for those who have returned from Norway, the general consensus is that Norway is indeed worthy of such a title.

There is so much to do and see in this country from the natural formations like fjords, wildlife watching to touring the country while enjoying the sights of its cities and regions. It is a big country as well, so it might make more sense to pick one of the tours to Norway which will handle all your transport and accommodation.

Here are some places worth visiting.

Geirangerfjord

You will love this ferry journey that runs for 20 km along the Geirangerfjord. The ara is so lovely that it was named a Unesco World Heritage Site. There are several abandoned farmsteads clinging along the cliffs of the fjord whereas ice-cold cascades beautifully twist and gush into the green waters. Travel in serene seclusion and take some amazing photos.

Northern lights

Most of us only visualize the aurora on screen. Visiting the northern lights provides you the opportunity to see the amazing natural phenomenon, the aurora borealis, commonly known as the northern lights. This is visible all through the long nights from October to March when the Arctic winter is on. It is amazing what nature has to offer, they dance in white or green curtains of lights. They shift intensely you will feel like a child imagining such visions. There is no guarantee the lights will appear at a certain time, but if you are lucky, the experience will stay with you for life.

Lofoten Islands

A tour of the Lofoten Islands, especially in the summer green and yellow, presents a wonderful view against the cobalt sky. Journeying through the villages, in the pure air is an experience is can only be described by going. The islands are linked by bridges, making it easy for hikers to have more fun. You can hop from one to the other by bicycle, car, or bus.

Oslo-Bergen Railway

The train ride from Oslo to Bergen is at times described as the most beautiful train trip in the world. It presents the opportunity to sample the best scenery Norway has to offer. It will take you through the forest in southern Norway then takes you through the beautiful Hardangervidda Plateau before descending to the lovely country then into Bergen. There is so much to see along the journey.

Oslo

Oslo is slowly transforming into the world-class centre of arts and culture. With so many art galleries and museums, there is so much to take in as a tourist. Their new glacier-white opera house on the waterfront has transformed the city scape.

Hurtigruten coastal ferry

The coastal ferry is not just a means to get around; it will give you the most spectacular journeys you will ever take along the coast anywhere in the world. The Hurtigruten ferry travels daily between Bergen and Kirkenes where it docks at isolated villages, dips into fjords and takes you across the Arctic Circle showcasing the entire length of Norway’s remarkable coast.

Svalbard

Svalbard is a wilderness area sliced from the polar north. This sub polar archipelago features shapely peaks, very beautiful fjords, and massive ice fields. It is remote but very accessible and is Europe’s greatest wilderness area. The area is home to a sixth of the world’s polar bears, which surprisingly, outnumber humans here.

Bryggen, Bergen

Visit the city of Bergen in the beautiful Norwegian landscapes. It is acceptable to say Bergen is Europe’s most beautiful city. Its waterfront district, Bryggen, which is a Unesco World Heritage site has a rich history of seafaring trade. It features very old tangle of wooden buildings. This district now shelters the traditional restaurants that make the city famous.

Hiking the Jotunheimen

This area has so many hiking trails crisscrossing the National Park. Its name Jotunheimen translates to Home of the Giants.” The area has 275 summits above 2000m and 60 glaciers all making it very beautiful. You will enjoy the sights and settings.

Kystriksveien (coastal route)

Leisurely travel this coastal route and take in its staggering beauty. It measures 650 km but you don’t have to travel it all; just sample what you can as you head northwards. The ferry offers frequent built-in breaks and access to stunning seascapes. There are inland glaciers and off shore islands like Vega which is is well known for the eider ducks, or Lovund which is home to 200,000 puffins.

Conclusion

That is just sample of things to see and do. To best experience the country, small groups tours to Norway will enable you to see the highlights without being slowed down by larger groups.
