Ebeneezer Scrooge hated Christmas and everything it stood for – the happiness and togetherness that people felt during the magical time in December offended him. Happily, there are many people who love Christmas and the joy it brings to so many, and these people want to celebrate it in as “Christmassy” a way as possible.
Going on a holiday in December can put people right into the Christmas spirit, whether it be over the actual days at the end of the month or earlier on to do some gift shopping in a foreign city, or simply to enjoy the festivities and get into the mood in the weeks before. If you shop around for cheap holidays you will be able to find a good deal so that it won’t make too much of a hole in your pocket in the weeks leading up to Christmas!
There are many differing destinations that you can pick for a different experience of the festive season, with the top 5 below….and some of them may surprise you when I say they are for adults!
1. New York
The Big Apple in the USA has the most amazing festive atmosphere. The fact that it is very likely to snow in December adds to the atmosphere, with the elaborate lights, trees and decorations making it a truly magical experience.
There is so much to do in your time there, you can head through the many shops to find presents for your loved ones, go for a lovely Christmas meal in one of the nicely decorated restaurants or even go Ice Skating. The Rockefeller Center is the traditional centrepiece of the NYC Christmas, with a massive tree and big ice rink looking immaculate in the snow, everybody in their hats and gloves with big smiles on their faces. Central Park is another area with a big ice rink and great decorations. Macy’s and Saks on Fifth Avenue has legendary window displays which you will find magical.
2. Disneyland
Even for those without kids, going to Disney on holiday in December can be a magical festival experience, with decorations everywhere, an Xmas parade going down “Main Street” and festively dressed characters, it can bring out the big kid in everybody. Whether you choose to holiday in Florida, Paris or California, you will have an amazing time.
3. Paris
Paris is similar to New York for its festive spirit, with the possibility of snow it can also be magical. It is great for a romantic break away from everything. You will find decorations, trees and lots of light displays all round the city. Not forgetting the shops as well – it is the perfect festive holiday for adults.
4. Lapland
This is another one that may surprise you as an adult destination, however there are adult only trips to Lapland! You sledge around the snow pulled by reindeer, drink mulled wine in a log cabin and go on tours of the forests and hills. It is a truly magical experience and is guaranteed to get you into the mood for the holiday season. You can even go and see Santa Clause too! It is perfect for couples to experience the magic together.
5. Australia
A complete curveball in destinations, but Australia will give you a completely different Christmas holiday experience….sun! Everywhere else you are likely to see snow, however “down under” you will likely spend the 25th December having a BBQ on the beach with a beer. This may not be for everybody, a lot of people will want the snow, lights and trees but there are some who crave sun, so a hot, sunburned Australian Christmas may be for you!
There is something for everyone, from cities to remote forests to beaches, if you want to spend December away from home you will find something!
