Rocky Point has long been a popular destination for vacationers. College students flock to the area during Spring Break to enjoy the beautiful beaches, sunny weather, and abundance of activities to partake in during their stay in this resort town. In recent years, Rocky Point has worked diligently to rebrand itself as more than just a Spring Break destination, instituting new laws that help make the area more family friendly. But no matter if you’re a young college student itching to let off some steam, traveling with your family for a much-needed vacation, or just looking to escape your normal routine for a few days, there’s no denying that Rocky Point’s beaches are the main attraction.
Sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and more are all popular here, but for the more adventurous vacationer, there’s really only one activity to consider: surfing! Nothing beats conquering the waves with nothing more than a board under your feet and your own skill. Rocky Point doesn’t have large waves that you can find at more popular surfing spots, but beginners will find Rocky Point to be a great destination for surfing. More advanced water sports enthusiasts can still experience the thrill of surfing through one of Rocky Point’s most popular activities: kite surfing! You can find a number of surfing instructors in the area – many near some of the top vacation rentals in the area, such as the ones offered by FMI Rentals – to help you make the most of your experience on the water, as well as shops to rent equipment from during your stay. Ready to get started? Read on to learn about some of the best surf spots in all of Rocky Point!
Sandy Beach
The most popular beach in all of Rocky Point, Sandy Beach is a good spot to start your kitesurfing adventures. Many of the top resorts are situated along Sandy Beach, along with a large number of shops and small businesses. The water along Sandy Beach stays fairly shallow; paired with the larger number of beachgoers, you probably won’t want to try traditional surfing here. Kitesurfers can head out into the deeper water, with the help of Rocky Point Kite Surfing, to enjoy whipping along the water, propelled by the breeze.
Playa Mirador
Part of the larger Las Conchas beach area, Playa Mirador gets its name from the neighborhood that lies next to it. Playa Mirador is a rockier beach than Sandy Beach, allowing for more interesting surfing conditions. You can find Playa Mirador to the east of Whale Hill on the west side of Las Conchas.
Playa Encanta
Located on the eastern side of an estuary, Playa Encanta is a longer drive away from Rocky Point proper than the other beaches on the list, which makes it an ideal spot for tackling the water. Less people travel out to this beach, giving you plenty of space to practice your new skills without fear of running into other beachgoers. Playa Encanta’s secluded nature makes it our favorite spot for a relaxing day of sunbathing as well!
