Top tips for entertaining yourself on a plane, train, or bus

Top tips for entertaining yourself on a plane, train, or bus

There’s no denying that traveling brings with it a lot of perks. We get to know a new place, experience a new (and often altogether different) environment, and try out new experiences, new cuisine, and partake in a wholly new adventure. But if you’re traveling somewhere, the hardest part is often the journey itself and not the destination. Being on an airplane, train, or bus can drain our energy and leave us feeling completely bored.

Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way. There are ways to amuse and entertain yourself whilst aboard a plane, train, or bus, and it doesn’t have to take too much effort, either. The hours will fly by before you know it, and you’ll be in your final destination in no time.

Surf the web

In the days before the internet, travel was indeed boring if you didn’t come prepared with something to do. Now with the internet practically everywhere, there is no excuse to ever say “I’m bored!”

Airlines, trains, and buses are now offering internet access, and cheap global roaming is available from your mobile provider, filling in the gaps where there is no wifi.

You can now take your work on the road, chat with friends on the ground while you are in the air, read online magazines, or research what to do at your next travel destination.

A word of warning though. When you are using public internet you should always use a VPN to protect your data. If you are using public networks to do things like checking your email or internet banking, you risk your sensitive information being stolen by hackers. And from a more practical perspective, if you are traveling abroad, you may find that you can’t access your subscribed streaming services as they are restricted by country. You might be halfway through your favorite TV series only to find out that you can’t view it in your new location.

To get around these problems you should use a trusted Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN provides online anonymity that protects you from hackers, and you can set it by country, allowing you to access your streaming services. There are many VPN’s on offer now, and the level of service changes frequently, so the best way to find a VPN is to compare your options at https://vpnsurfers.com/vpn/travel/.

Get to know your travel buddies

When we are on a plane, train, or other type of transport, we are mixed with strangers, people of all ages and backgrounds. If you don’t want to be bored out of your mind, why don’t you try chatting with your travel buddy? Chatting with a fellow passenger can help you while away the hours – and who knows, you may even gain a new friend.

Try a writing exercise

If getting to know a stranger isn’t exactly your cup of tea, there’s another option: to write. People often bring a book or tablet for that long journey, but not many bring a pad or notebook and pen. If you’re stuck on a plane, train, or bus one of the best things you can do is write. You don’t have to write a full novel, mind you – make it simple by writing down the places you’d like to see on your next trip, what you’d like to do once you reach your destination, or a list of errands or things to buy. Your writing exercise need not be complex – it just needs to give you something to do. Or, if you’re of an even more artistic bent, you can draw as well.

Play online games

Most people have a bevy of films and TV shows saved on their phones and tablets when they travel. Others like to browse the internet and others like checking their social media accounts. But whilst this can help pass the time, it tends to leave us feeling ‘dazed’ if we do it for too long. After a film marathon, don’t you feel like your brain needs a re-boot?

What you can do is take advantage of other tech innovations as well. We’re talking about games, and plenty of them. You can play a variety of games online. For instance, you can play roulette on the move, and there are many sites offering roulette games on mobile. Not only are they fun and exciting, they can even help you win actual prize money as well!
