For those of us that love to travel, one thing is often overlooked is the quality of our own spaces right at home. It’s easy to focus on always escaping to new travel destinations while totally overlooking the spaces where you spend the most time, so here we’ll try to give you a few suggestions to help make your home feel a bit more like home.
Your bedroom!
There is one room that you see twice each day for just about every day of your life. It’s the room that you wake up in and the room that you fall asleep in: your bedroom. And because of the vital role that it plays in your day-to-day life, there may be no room in the world more important to your mental and physical well-being than your bedroom.
Think about it: your bedroom is like a life partner! It’s the first thing you see in the morning when you wake up and the last thing that you see at night as you fall asleep. It’s the place that comforts you as you sleep, and it’s a place you can retreat to during the day for naps and seclusion. Your kitchen matters, your work space matters, and your other rooms matter, too – but none of them matter in quite the same way as your bedroom.
That’s why it’s absolutely essential that your bedroom suits your needs. A good bedroom should be comfortable and inviting, private and relaxing, beautiful and functional. Does yours fit that description? Here are a few things to consider.
The space itself
Your bedroom is a room. You can’t do too much about the shape of it (unless you move or renovate), but you can take a look at the surfaces that surround you. Do you need new flooring in your bedroom? What about a fresh coat of paint? Where are the lights? It’s worth investing in these elements of your room, because you can’t ignore a bad bedroom. If you want to wake up and step onto a soft floor, perhaps carpeting is the best choice for your bedroom – or maybe you can put down an area rug or a small rug next to your bed to combine the look of hardwood and the comfort of softer flooring. The color that you paint your room matters, too – it should be appealing, soothing, and fundamentally you. Are your windows large and clean? Do you need a lamp, or is the built-in lighting enough? These are all questions to consider before we even begin to consider the furniture and other features within the room – start with the room itself.
The furniture and decor
We’ll get to the most important piece of furniture in the room – your bed – in a moment, but first let’s consider everything else. Where do you keep your clothes – in the dresser or in a closet? Experiment with different ways to organize your space. Move your furniture around, and consider swapping out pieces here and there. You want to find a way to make your room as functional as it is comfortable, because starting the day with stress and irritation is a surefire path to routine misery.
The decor, too, should suit your style. Match your bedding to the paint and your paintings to the bedding. Add mementos and photos that make you feel at home. Comfort and beauty go hand-in-hand, so choosing your bedroom decorations carefully is absolutely essential to your continued comfort and joy.
The bed!
No one part of your bedroom is as important as your bed, of course, so don’t skimp on it! Invest in a great mattress – you’ll spend hours on it every night, so be sure to spend wisely instead of being cheap. Get great bedding, and learn about your options. What is a duvet cover? What is a duvet, and is it the same as a comforter? Do you like firm pillows, or soft? Spend some time at the store and online, and make your decisions carefully. The effect of a great bed and great bedding lasts all day long, so don’t think for a moment that any of this is unimportant. When you perfect everything about your bedroom, you’ll see that it has a profound and positive effect on your life.
