Malaga city and Malaga airport are very well situated among the major tourist resorts along the Costa del Sol, such as Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Marbella and Estepona. Only a little bit further away are the cities of Granada and Gibraltar, Cadiz and Seville.
How is the transfer situation along the Costa del Sol from Malaga airport?
Malaga train station is situated in the city centre, right next to the bus station. Malaga bus station is operating services to many locations in Malaga province and other provinces, even other countries. The new train station in Maria Zambrano has recently included into its offers the high speed train AVE Madrid-Malaga. As well runs from here the suburban train, with connects the capital with the airport and the main resorts along the western Costa del Sol.
The great inconvenience is that this railway service only runs to Fuengirola. The more distant locations, such as Marbella and Estepona can only reached by means of Bus, Taxi, private Transfer or car hire.
Malaga airport train transfer (line C-1) stops in front of Terminal 2 and is about a 12 minute ride to Malaga and 30 minutes to Fuengirola (last stop). The train is the best means of public transport to get in the city, as the bus (no 19, outside right hand terminal 2) makes many stops along the route and picks up passengers.
As mentioned before, it is not possible to travel from the airport to Marbella by train, but only until Fuengirola, which is situated halfway between both locations. From there onwards in this area the public bus is the only option if you don’t consider car hire Malaga airport as option.
From Malaga airport leaves a direct shuttle bus to Marbella outside the arrivals lobby. The drawback here is that out of season (October to June) the bus runs only every two hours and in summer every hour, getting quite crammed with people. At Malaga Airport you pay the driver direct; at Marbella Bus Station you buy a ticket from the ticket office.
Taxis are situated just outside the arrivals lobby and for the transfer to Marbella you can expect to pay between €56 (daytime) and €66 (nighttime); to Estepona the fare is €75 (daytime) and €85 (nighttime).
The airport has direct access to the national road N-340 and the highway A-7, which both run along all the major resorts of the Costa del Sol and from Malaga airport to Marbella it takes about 40 minutes by car.
If you don´t want to drive yourself but don´t want to miss comfort either, there is available private transfer at Malaga airport, with multilingual drivers and high-class vehicles, picking you up directly at the airport and bringing you directly to your destination.
Other options available are minibuses at Malaga airport. Mini-bus transfer is a very convenient choice for larger groups; you can book before hand and it will bring you to all the coastal resorts around Malaga.
For more transfer at ease, once in Marbella, you can do a Mini-cruise which covers the distance between Marbella and Puerto Banús, instead of driving there. The journey takes about 30 minutes. If you want a comfortable stroll through the streets of Marbella, you can do so in the Touristic train or do it the romantic way and enjoy Marbella’s Old Town with horse and carriage, just right of the Alameda Park.
